An Anomalous Muscular Bundle Connecting Biceps Femoris to Semitendinosus

چکیده
The hamstring muscle group consists of three muscles in the posterior thigh; the semitendinosus (ST) and the semimembranosus (SM) are located at the medial side, the biceps femoris at the lateral side (BF) [1]. The biceps femoris has two heads, which are anatomically and functionally distinct; the short (BFsh) and the long (BFlh) head. The semitendinosus and long head of the biceps femoris have a common origin from medial facet of ischial tuberosity, whereas the semimembranosus has origin from lateral facet of ischial tuberosity separately [2]. Short head of biceps femoris originates from the linera aspera to join the long head of biceps femoris. The semimembranosus muscle attaches to posteromedial aspect of the tibia while the semitendinosus muscle attach to anteromedial aspect of the tibia by way of a common tendon with gracilis and sartorius muscles. Biceps femoris muscle inserts laterally on the head of the fibula. With the exception of the BFSH, hamstrings are innervated by the tibial part of sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve passes the proximal hamstring muscle complex on the lateral side at a distance of approximately 1 cm from most lateral aspect [3].

Unusual Unilateral Multiple Muscular Variations of Back of Thigh
During routine cadaveric dissection for the undergraduate students in the Department of Anatomy, we noted multiple muscular variations in a middle-aged male cadaver. All the variations were seen at the back of thigh (flexor compartment) of right lower limb. An anomalous muscle of 17 cm length with average width of 1.5 cm. was inserted to the semitendinosus, a third head of biceps femoris of 6.5...
متن کاملMultiple Muscular Variations in the Neck, Upper Extremity, and Lower Extremity Biased toward the Left Side of a Single Cadaver
Although numerous reports have found accessory or supernumerary muscles throughout the human body, multiple appearances of these variations biased toward one side of body are rare. We report a 76-yr-old male cadaver with an accessory head of the biceps brachii and palmaris profundus, and a muscular slip between the biceps femoris and semitendinosus on the left side in addition to a bilateral ac...
متن کاملThe Electromyographic Feedback and Feedforward Activity of Selected Lower Extremity Muscles During Toe-in Landing in Female Athletes
Background: Positioning the legs in performing spike technique significantly contributes to the development and prevention of lower limb injuries. The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the feedback and feedforward activaties of selected lower limb muscles during triple jump spike with and without toe-in landing in female volleyball players. Methods: In this controlled-laboratory stud...
متن کاملFunctional differences in the activity of the hamstring muscles with increasing running speed.
In this study, we examined hamstring muscle activation at different running speeds to help better understand the functional characteristics of each hamstring muscle. Eight healthy male track and field athletes (20.1 +/- 1.1 years) performed treadmill running at 50%, 75%, 85%, and 95% of their maximum velocity. Lower extremity kinematics of the hip and knee joint were calculated. The surface ele...
متن کاملAnatomical variation of the semitendinosus muscle origin
Introduction The hamstring muscles are frequently implicated in posterior thigh pain due to strains. The hamstring muscles are the three most superficial muscles that span the posterior thigh, and consist of the biceps femoris, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus. The long head of biceps femoris originates from the inferiomedial aspect of the ischial tuberosity and inserts into the head of the ...
